So. Let’s talk pie. Who’s a fan?
Yeah, me too.
You know, I have to say – I never got very excited about the whole cupcake trend. (Oh my goodness, is that trend over yet? If one more cupcake shop opens up I am going to scream.) Don’t get me wrong, I like cupcakes. But I feel like they are a little bit overplayed. I’m just saying, I wouldn’t go out of my way to make a big deal about a cupcake. It’s just a small cake, people! You don’t see shops opening up to sell tiny versions of ice cream cones or tea-sized sandwiches. That would be ridiculous, right? Right. Did I just lose four of my five followers? Stay with me here….
Maybe it is because of my own personal taste. Those who know me know that I am not a big sweets person. I would much rather have a bag of super-salty potato chips than a piece of chocolate (unless that piece of chocolate is covered in sea salt… then we can talk). So it takes a lot to get me excited about any dessert. But pie…. Well now, that is a different story.
There is just something about pie (and cobblers and crisps, for that matter). Maybe it is the flakey, savory crust that contrasts so nicely with a gooey, warm filling. Or perhaps it is because pie is a symbol of fall, of Thanksgiving… of America? Whatever the reason may be, pie is downright spectacular.
As we approach the 10th anniversary of September 11th, people across the nation are celebrating America in various ways. Services are being held, documentaries are being aired, and for whatever reason, Joe Scarborough even decided to write a song and perform it on air today. (Side note: I am actually a big fan of him and I very much appreciate the sentiment, but he should probably stick to politics.) I am partaking in some of these activities, too (minus the songwriting). I have my DVR set to record various documentaries; I listened to a very interesting story on NPR this morning that traced the years leading up to the attacks (great story – listen to it if you get a chance); and my eyes have been glued to the news all morning as reporters at ground zero fill my living room with feature stories from victims’ families. But, on a much less serious note, I am also partaking in pie. That’s right, I am eating that good ol’ American staple to celebrate America this week.
I’ve always loved pie and have always enjoyed making pie, but I have to admit, I don’t think I have had a piece of pie since last Thanksgiving… That is until this past Wednesday night. That is when I ventured down to the oh-so-happenin’ H Street with Willis and Marian to see Twin Shadows at Rock & Roll Hotel. After a night of sweaty dancing and a few Brooklyn Lagers, I was quite hungry for something satisfying. I should also mention that it was cold and rainy, so I was definitely in the mood for something warm and comforting. Insert Dangerously Delicious Pies, a pie shop that sells sweet and savory pies! (How genius is that, by the way? A PIE SHOP!) Perfect.
Of course I was in the mood for the savory side of the menu board, which included pies like Steak Mushroom Union and Gruyere, Chicken Pot Pie, Pork BBQ, Sausage Tomato Fennel and Steak Chili, among others. Yeah, my mouth is watering just typing this… Against my better calorie counting judgment, I went ahead and ordered up the Steak Mushroom Union and Gruyere, and boy am I glad I did. It actually tasted very similar to one of my other favorite comfort foods: beef stroganoff; it contained all of the similar flavors, but with the added benefit of a super buttery crust.
This experience, of course, got my head and stomach spinning and so I am now determined to make an apple pie this week to continue my pie-high, and also to do something very American during this special week. Of course, this apple pie is going to taste amazing, since I plan on picking the apples (or at least purchasing them from the farmer’s market) while we are out in the western part of the state this weekend. Nothing better than a Virginia apple from the Blue Ridge mountains. And there is nothing more American than an apple pie.
I hope everyone else is able to find some comfort when remembering 9/11 this weekend… whether it be in food, songwriting or documentaries.
