The Ginger Beer Mojito – Because Hemingway gave us more than great literature

It’s true. Come summer time, my most frequently uttered phrase is “mojito me.”

My obsession with the incredibly refreshing beverage is not nearly as bad in the city as it is when I travel someplace tropical. (Mostly because I cannot afford to be in love with a $14 drink, even if it is served on a beautiful District rooftop.) …. But once my tush hits a stool in a swim-up bar somewhere sunny, it’s all over. I completely surrender to the power of the mojito.

Skip the simple syrup – Use fresh lime juice and a good quality ginger beer

I love them all: the classic mojito, the watermelon mojito, the passion fruit mojito…. But most of all, I love my ginger beer mojito.

Mint in glass

No need for fancy tools – Muddle the mint with the butt of a knife!

Think of this drink as a summery twist on a dark and stormy. It’s spicy (thanks to the ginger), refreshing and minty – And best of all, you don’t even need to bother with making a simple syrup!

So bottoms-up to summertime and another way to sip yourself down to the tropics.

The Ginger Beer Mojito

  • Muddle torn fresh mint leaves (a small handful – about 5-7 leaves) in a glass. Here’s a trick: I use the butt of a knife, since I don’t have the fancy mojito tool!
  • Top the muddled mint with about 4-5 ice cubes
  • Pour about 1-1 ½ ounces of fresh time juice over the ice
  • Add about 2 ounces of rum (not dark rum!)
  • Fill the rest of the glass with a good quality ginger beer (about 3 ounces)
  • Garnish with mint leaves and lime wedge
